Syria and its ally Russia have blamed Israel for a missile attack which killed 14 people at an airbase near Homs.
The air strikes in the early hours of Monday morning followed a suspected poison gas attack in which more than 40 civilians died in a Syrian opposition foothold in eastern Ghouta on Saturday.
Footage posted on social media were purported to show rockets flying over Homs towards the Syrian military’s T4 air base. Some of the missiles appear to be intercepted by defence forces.
The country’s state news agency initially said the strikes were likely “American aggression”, after US President Donald Trump warned Bashar al-Assad’s regime and its backers had “a big price to pay” following the chemical weapon attack, which has been blamed on the Syrian government.
But Damascus and Moscow later said two Israeli jets had launched eight missiles towards Homs from Lebanese airspace. According to Syrian media, three rockets struck the air base.
Monitoring groups have said at least 14 people were killed, some of them members of a Shia militia supporting the Assad regime. Israel has not confirmed it was behind the strikes.
The bombing came amid global condemnation of the alleged poison gas attack in Douma, a rebel-held town in eastern Ghouta.
