Video shows horrific moment crane bursts into flames on M62

This is the moment a crane exploded into flames on the M62 earlier this afternoon.

A huge fire ball can be seen in the distance before a cloud of smoke fills the air above in the dashcam footage.

It was filmed by Matthew Hartley as he travelled down the motorway near junction 22 for Rishworth Moor.

The driver of the mobile crane escaped uninjured, a Highways England spokesman said.

Police closed off the eastbound carriageway following the blaze.

The fire was put out by 8pm, but the Highways England officers warned the road was likely to remain closed for several hours.

At 8pm, a spokesman for Highways England said they were awaiting vehicle recovery.

He said the fire had caused spillage of diesel and hydraulic fluid.

A statement from Highways England said: "The M62 is closed Eastbound between junction 22 (Saddleworth) and junction 23 (Huddersfield).

"A mobile crane has caught fire. West Yorkshire Fire Service and Police are in attendance."
