Video shows gallons of water being pumped into the River Trent

A video has shown gallons of water being pumped into the River Trent - reducing the risk of flooding to nearby businesses and homes.

Gedling Borough Council officials have been draining the water into the Trent at the Colwick Quays industrial estate, off the A612 Colwick Loop Road.

The water is being pumped from a nearby dyke.

Providing an update on the work being carried out on Tuesday afternoon (February 18), council director Dave Wakelin said: "We've deployed a huge pump that you can see in the background that is taken out of the Colwick Quays Dyke.

"About 1,400 gallons a minute. And that will absolutely help the situation.

"In the industrial estate we've had some flooding in one particular premises.

"And then ultimately (the work will) reduce the risk of properties nearby being flooded."

Leader of the council, Councillor John Clarke, said: "Our teams have been working around the clock supporting residents and business affected by Storm Dennis.

"We have been pumping water out of Colwick Quays Dyke into the River Trent for 24 hours now in an effort to alleviate the water levels there and in nearby Colwick village.

"We have deployed sandbags to properties that require them across borough where there is an immediate threat of flooding.

"We are working closely with the Environment Agency and the lead flooding authority, Nottinghamshire County Council, to make sure we are helping residents as best as we can.”

More than 20 roads across the county remained closed on Tuesday in the aftermath of Storm Dennis from over the weekend.
