Video shows dramatic rescue of swan stranded in ice on Hogganfield Loch

A video shared with Glasgow Live shows the dramatic rescue of a swan stranded in ice on Hogganfield Loch.

Amid the sub-zero temperatures, a number of lochs, ponds and waterways across our city have frozen over. Sadly, at Hogganfield, the wintry conditions led to a swan getting stuck in the ice, as we reported earlier today.

Thankfully, the brave Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews were on hand to rescue the animal, with two firefighters plunging themselves into the freezing water before shuffling through ice and ushering the swan to safety.

Reader June Murphy captured the entire incident on her phone, with footage showing the dramatic rescue as local residents and other emergency service staff watched on.

The animal, clearly terrified, tried to take flight when approached by the duo, however, couldn't free itself from the loch, which is located in the north east of Glasgow.

Dozens of southsiders also took to the iced over pond within Queen's Park today, as Police Scotland reminded Glaswegians of the dangers of doing so.

Police Scotland chief superintendent David Duncan, said: "Winter, and the festive period, brings increased demands on all the emergency services, and the partner organisations which work alongside the blue light services.

"With the current restrictions on travel and socialising as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19), more people may be out walking in their local areas than might usually be, as well as exploring new locations.

“The best advice is to avoid open water, be it frozen or not, and don't put yourself, your children or your pets at risk. It's impossible to tell how thick ice is at a glance, and water temperatures beneath broken ice can quickly make someone hypothermic. Please, stay safe near water this winter."
