Video showing police tasering man as child cries 'daddy' prompts calls for review

Footage has emerged showing a police officer in the Greater Manchester area tasering a man in front of his terrified young child.

Greater Manchester Police is investigating the incident, believed to have happened at a petrol station in the Stretford area on Wednesday night.

The Manchester Evening News reports that the force and Mayor Andy Burnham are now actively looking into the distressing clip.

The force tweeted: "We are aware of a video on social media that shows a man being tasted [sic].

"We are aware of this incident and are investigating."

The wider circumstances of the incident are not clear.

The video has been widely shared on social media, with many people raising concerns and calling for action.

In the clip a small boy can be heard repeatedly shouting 'Daddy' as a man grapples with two officers on the petrol station forecourt.

One of the officers then says 'You're the one causing the problem', to which the man replies 'I'm not causing any problems'.

It appears one of the officers then says 'Right, Taser him', moments before the weapon is fired.

The man then falls to the floor as the now hysterical child screams 'Daddy'.

Some time later several more police vehicles arrive and the man is handcuffed and led into the back of a police van.

Speaking about the footage, Mayor Burnham said: "On Friday morning a video was brought to my attention of a police incident at a petrol station in Greater Manchester involving two police officers, a man, a child and the use of a taser.

"I was concerned about what I saw and immediately asked GMP to look into it and provide me with an explanation of what had happened.

"From what I have been told, it would appear that the officers were right to apprehend the individual who was putting his child and others at risk by his actions.

"But it is not at all clear that the level of force used in this instance, particularly in front of a child, was proportionate or justified and that is why I have asked for an urgent and independent review to be carried out."
