Video: Rare whale spotted in Wicklow Harbour may have to be euthanised, experts say

A rare species of whale that was spotted in Wicklow this morning may have to be euthanised, experts have claimed.

As pictures and videos have emerged of the male Sowerby's beaked whale in the harbour, the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) fears that the mammal is close to death.

Sowerby's beaked whales, also known as North Atlantic or North Sea beaked whales, are a species of toothed whales. Males have two triangular teeth present mid-way along the lower jaw.

The IWDG has expressed concerns as the rare whale may have suffered acoustic trauma.

Acoustic traumas may occur in beaked whales as a result of noise pollution in the ocean.

In a series of tweets, a spokesperson for the group said: "Not looking in great condition, breathing regularly, suggestion of being thin in this video from Nick Veale.

"Expect it to die. Deep-diving beaked whales particularly to acoustic trauma (sic)."

Sadly the whale is reportedly "nearly dead" as it was seen stranding near the sailing club.

"[The whale] seems to be stranding near sailing club. Euthanasia might be an option if we can find a vet prepared to attempt. NPWS will support recovery for post mortem.

"Thanks to Coastguard for their help."
