Video of young swan struggling through debris shows how polluted Water of Leith is

A video of a young swan struggling to pick its way through a tide of debris in the Water of Leith has highlighted the problem of pollution on the waterway.

The footage, captured on Sunday, shows the bird negotiating through a filthy patch of water in the basin.

There's an ongoing campaign to clean up the Water of Leith, with the Save Our Shore group calling for action to tackle the "sea of crap" at the northern end.

It provoked outrage earlier in September when a dog was found drowned in the debris.

Heavy rainfall earlier this year meant the Water of Leith was swamped with rubbish and wood. A public meeting is due to be held on October 30 to discuss who is responsible for cleaning up the river.

The video of the cygnet was posted on Twitter by Leith Docks HQ.

They said: "Leith cygnets are 22 wks old. Doing well but none of the local waterfowl should have to negotiate this obstacle course, regardless of age.

"@SOSLeith please hold those responsible to account at your meeting. This one is on you @EdinburghCC @forthports & WOL2000. Filmed today."
