Most people have made their minds up about quarterback Baker Mayfield. The only opinion that matters is that of the Cleveland Browns organization. Some fans/media/analysts believe the former #1 overall pick is not good enough to be a franchise quarterback while others believe they’ve seen it but that injuries and other limitations are a problem.
What has been universally agreed upon, including by the quarterback himself, is that he has not played well enough for most of the season. Mayfield has repeatedly stated as much while general manager Andrew Berry reiterated that they believe he is healthy enough to win them games.
Super Bowl-winning quarterback Kurt Warner chimed in on his thoughts on Mayfield. Warner took a limited sample, the first half of the game against the Baltimore Ravens, and tried to explain what he saw. From the breakdown, Warner noted the biggest problem on certain plays as:
- Drops
- Routes run poorly
- Less than optimal route combinations
- A misstep by Mayfield
- Mayfield’s fumble which “happens to all of us” according to Warner
A high-level quarterback breaking down film of another quarterback deserves respect. Warner attempts to explain the failures of the offense in the first half.
Unfortunately, Warner also only broke down the first half in a game where things seemed to get worse as time went on. Warner also seems defensive of quarterback criticism, in general.
