Jim Harbaugh’s assessment of Urban Meyer’s coaching career became a headline earlier this week when the Michigan head coach paid the former Ohio State head coach a compliment and dealt him a blow in the same sentence. Harbaugh stands by his word.
At Big Ten media days Friday, Harbaugh said that his thoughts on Meyer’s on-field coaching ability and his off-the-field environment were not new information “No context you should know about. I don’t think it was anything that was anything new or a bombshell,” Harbaugh said. “It’s things that many of you have an understanding of or have written about.”
The Athletic’s The TK Show podcast, released Wednesday, gave Harbaugh the opportunity to be transparent about his feelings about his 0-4 record versus the Buckeyes since taking over as the Wolverines head coach. Harbaugh was honest in recognizing Meyer’s dominance and also in acknowledging the turmoil and ethical questions that surrounded Meyer’s tenure in Columbus.
“Urban Meyer’s had a winning record,” Harbaugh said on the podcast. “A really phenomenal record everywhere he’s been. But also, controversy follows everywhere he’s been.”
