CHICAGO _ Police say they have video from inside a Lisle cigar lounge that shows a woman suddenly standing up and firing, killing a retired Illinois State Police trooper, and wounding another retired trooper and an off-duty trooper before turning the gun on herself Friday night.
But they still aren't sure why.
"We have no idea why this happened," Lisle's acting police chief, Ron Wilke, told reporters outside The Humidor in Lisle, a suburb about 25 miles west of Chicago. "I believe they know each other."
The slain trooper, Gregory Rieves, 51, had retired on March 31, 2019. Rieves was "well-loved by all those who worked with him," state police Director Brendan F. Kelly said at a news conference Saturday morning.
Retired trooper Lloyd Graham, 55, and off-duty trooper Kaiton Bullock, 48, were taken to Edward Hospital and Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in serious condition. Kelly said they were recovering and were "surrounded by loved ones."
The shooter, identified by police as Lisa V. McMullan, 51, died at the scene.
Surveillance video shows McMullan sitting behind the three men in a "media room," watching a big-screen television. Around 10:10 p.m., she stands up, draws a handgun and fires shots at the three "without apparent provocation," according to the Lisle Police Department.
McMullan shot one of the men in the back of the head and then fired several rounds at the two other men before shooting herself.
Graham had retired several months ago, and Bullock is a 22-year veteran of the state police's Chicago district, according to the agency. "This is certainly a painful moment for everyone in the Illinois State Police family," Kelly said.
Law enforcement officers expect to encounter violence on the job, but Kelly said "it is not always expected while off duty to have to face that kind of violence."
The Humidor tweeted a statement saying, "We look at all our customers as family and we ask you to pray for the victim and the speedy healing of the injured."
