The Lunar New Year is upon us and the NBA — and Golden State Warriors — are celebrating! In a just-released video, the stars of the Bay Area’s favorite team wished the world a Happy Lunar New Year — commonly referred to as the Chinese New Year (in the West) — in Chinese.
The NBA began exporting basketball to China in 1979, following then-president Richard Nixon’s efforts to foster a relationship between the United States and China. The game caught on in Asia and hit a fever pitch in the early 2000’s when 7-foot-6 center Yao Ming signed with the Houston Rockets.
