VIDEO: Groups Protest Mining on Indigenous Land in Hualian

Through the week of Nov. 23, 2017, protestors comprised mostly of indigenous peoples in Taiwan gathered at the entry to an Asia Cement Corporation mine along the Central Cross-Island Highway leading into East Taiwan’s Taroko National Park.

Activists assert that a permit renewal to mine on indigenous land was expedited by the government. They allege that this was a preparatory measure for the potential future revamping of Taiwan's national mining regulations laws and an inside job of protecting big money interests.

Hank Hsieh with the Wild at Heart Legal Defense Association explains the situation.
