Video gives Edinburgh locals sneak peek at £32m plans for car-free George Street

Edinburgh Council has given locals an incredible sneak peek at multi-million-pound proposals to overhaul one of the city's main thoroughfares.

The council previously announced plans to revitalise George Street by designing "a greener, safer, accessible place for everyone to enjoy".

It will be the first project to be delivered as part of the council's Edinburgh's City Centre Transformation.

An ambitious ten-year strategy was devised following a consultation in 2018, where residents were asked what changes they'd wish to see.

The council says the plan prioritises movement on foot, by bike and by public transport, with "a walkable city centre" being a key objective.

This is set to see the creation of a pedestrian priority zone and a network of connected, high-quality, car-free streets.

Key to this is a review of the current bus network by 2025 and a largely car-free city centre by 2030, the council said.

Further designs and details will be unveiled on Thursday (24 February) for locals to provide feedback - you can check back on Edinburgh Live for this tomorrow.

The public will get the chance to engage with the plans in February and March before the proposals are finalised and brought before the Transport and Environment Committee in April, with construction to begin in summer 2021.
