Video: Erik McCoy receives draft-day call from Saints

The New Orleans Saints drafted former Texas A&M Aggies center Erik McCoy in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and NFL Network cameras were with him to document the moment when the Saints called him.

“I burst into tears. This is a moment I’ve been waiting for my whole life,” McCoy said afterwards during a conference call with New Orleans media. And there wasn’t a team he’d rather play for, a quarterback he’d rather play with: “Drew Brees is the best QB in the NFL.”

Overall, McCoy is grateful for the opportunity. He explained that the Saints expect him to continue playing center (he has some college experience at guard), and he intends to model some of his game off of Max Unger, his well-respected predecessor in New Orleans. “When I got on the phone with them, they told me they viewed me as a center, and that’s what they wanted me to come in and play.”

He certainly seems like a grounded, self-aware individual. Combined with his elite on-field performance, that suggests he has all the makings of a solid pro.
