Video editing workshop: further information

This article was last updated on 12 November 2015

The workshop is for a maximum of 24 students.

Students will gain an insight into what it is like to be a video editor at the Guardian, working on multimedia content for the website. Working in pairs, they will create a short film on the theme of climate change using iMovie. They will edit documentary footage filmed by Guardian video producers to fulfil a brief and produce a video that uses a range of editing techniques to tell a story effectively.

There will be a choice of briefs, all dealing with the issue of climate change: a documentary about polar bears, a short film about penguins in Antarctica, an explainer about global warming or a video for the Guardian's Keep it in the ground campaign.

Students will have to consider the message that they want to convey to their audience and how their editing choices will affect the way people interpret their film.

Suggested preparation activities

No specialist knowledge about video editing or climate change is necessary, as the workshop will provide an introduction to both. However, you may wish to consider the following suggestions prior to your visit:

View some examples of Guardian films on the video page; this is the style of video that students will produce on the day.

Have a look at the Guardian environment and climate change pages, and possibly the polar regions and Keep it in the ground pages in order to do some background research and understand current issues in these areas.

Feedback from teachers about recent video workshops

A truly superb day. Very informative and interesting and provided staff and students alike with invaluable skills that we can use at school. Very relevant for the global scholars programme the students are engaged in.
Townley Grammar School, Bexleyheath, Kent

Excellent and well explained. The students gained an insightful experience into the world of video editing.
