Video conferencing service Zoom explains why service was experiencing problems

Users of video conferencing service Zoom were experiencing audio and video issues on Sunday, May 17.

The problem had been ongoing since 9am and is mainly affecting people in the UK, according to website DownDetector.

Social media users described being unable join meetings and said they were having audio issues during calls. Log-in issues were also being reported.

The video conferencing software has rapidly grown in popularity during the coronavirus pandemic as millions turn to its group video calling features in order to work and study from home.

The company said last month it has about 300 million daily meeting participants, up from 10 million in December.

A spokesman for the company said: "Zoom users impacted by an issue hosting and joining Zoom Meetings and Zoom Video Webinars should now be able to host, join, and participate in these sessions.

"We are continuing to assess this matter that impacted a subset of our users and will monitor to ensure no further operational impact. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this might have caused."
