'... 2020 starts pretty well': Passenger captures moment plane wheel falls off

A video posted on Twitter has captured the moment a landing gear wheel catches fire and falls off an Air Canada plane during take-off.

The Twitter user posted "so, well, I'm currently on a plane that has just lost a wheel … 2020 starts pretty well," along with the footage.

The Air Canada flight, operated by Jazz Aviation, was reportedly flying from Montreal-Trudeau airport to Saguenay-Bagotville airport — around 75 minutes north by air — on January, 3 when the incident occurred.

"During take-off from Montreal en route to Bagotville (flight AC8684), one of the two wheels on the left main landing gear became detached," a Jazz Aviation spokesperson told The Independent.

The plane, which had 49 passengers on board, could not complete its route and had to turn back.

Extended video from another passenger on the flight shows the plane landed successfully.

"The experienced pilots maintained complete control of the aircraft," Jazz Aviation said in a statement.

"Our pilots are well-trained to deal with such situations and responded according to our standard operating procedures."

Emergency vehicles were called as a precautionary measure.

Last October, a plane operated by Kenyan domestic carrier Silverstone Air had to also divert after it lost a wheel during take-off.
