A driver of Bangkok’s No.8 bus has been fired after a clip showing him driving through a rail barrier at a downtown crossing drew heavy criticism among netizens.

The No.8 bus service operator sent a representative to explain the incident to the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA), which supervises bus services in Bangkok. Its driver, identified only as Prathan, went through a rail barrier at Saowanee intersection off Si Ayutthaya Road on the night of Oct 7.

The operator admitted it was the driver’s fault and promised to ask all drivers to strictly obey traffic rules and BMTA regulations.

The BMTA imposed a maximum fine of 5,000 baht on the bus operator. Mr Prathan was fired from the job.  The No.8 bus, which hit the rail barrier, has been suspended from service for seven days to Tuesday.

The clip, posted on @hearonboard Facebook page, drew criticism among netizens who wrote he had put passengers' lives at risk.
