Video: Boston Red Sox are divided over White House visit

Welcome to The Jump Cut, For The Win’s newest video series where we take an alternative approach to the most popular topics in sports.

When the Boston Red Sox visit President Trump this week, they’ll be without many of their players of color. Manager Alex Cora was unequivocal in why he would not go to the White House, stating that the Trump administration’s lack of significant aid to his country of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Marie was a deciding fact.

“The government has helped, but we have a long way to go. I put it in capital letters, this is our reality. I am the guy that has lived it. I am down there in the offseason and understand how it is. I just don’t feel right going to celebrate while people are struggling back home,” he told reporters.

The refusal of other high profile players, like David Price, to attend the visit, while all their white teammates are going, shows that the burden of supporting diversity and inclusion often falls on the already burdened shoulders of players of color.
