Video: Applegreen cheap fuel promotion causes traffic chaos in Palmerstown

An Applegreen promotion offering cheap fuel had to be shut down after it resulted in traffic chaos in west Dublin.

The Palmerstown filling station was offering fuel for 24.7 cent per litre as part of the company's birthday promotion on Friday.

The garage was asked to close its forecourt by the gardai, according to local councillor Alan Hayes.

Commuters were stuck in the village for up to 45 minutes as traffic was backed up to the M50 heading into town.

Cllr Hayes said on Twitter: "Thanks to @GardaTraffic who rightly told @goapplegreen in #Palmerstown to close the forecourt due to the traffic issues caused by a fuel promotion.

"Traffic was backed up to the M50 heading into town and residents, staff and visitors in the village were stuck for about 45 minutes."

A spokesperson for Applegreen said: "There was huge interest in our 24/7 birthday sale since early morning on Friday and we have had some reports of congestion at various locations, however we understand that most traffic dispersed quickly.

"We planned our 24.7 cent fuel sale to cause minimal disruption (only one hour per sale per location; last-minute announcements so no advance queueing) but also to try and ensure as many of our customers as possible could avail of this special offer.

"We continued to do everything we could to keep the queues moving and traffic flowing, and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused."
