Video and pictures show abandoned taxi after driver shot on Bridge of Peace in Drogheda, Co Louth

Video footage and pictures show an abandoned taxi on Drogheda's Bridge of Peace following a shooting this evening.

A taxi driver in his late 30s was injured when shots were fired at his car at around 6.20pm.

Gardai rushed to the scene and the man was taken to hospital, where his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The bridge was sealed off to traffic and local diversions put in place following the incident.

Pictures show a Garda forensic team examining the scene on the bridge.

The back right passenger door of the vehicle, a Skoda Octavia, is open. A number of items also lie on the ground near the front passenger door.

Gardai said earlier in a statement: "Gardai are currently at the scene of a shooting incident in Drogheda.

"The driver of (the) taxi, a man understood to be in his late 30s injured in the shooting, has been removed by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

"The bridge is currently closed to traffic in both directions and local diversions are in place.
