A Victorian man has been fined $3,114 after he pretended to be a transport, freight and logistics worker so he could enter Tasmania.

Tasmania Police said the 22-year-old man knowingly provided "altered" documents to enter the island state as an essential traveller under the transport category.

The man entered Tasmania on August 22. Police said they received "information from the community", leading them to investigate.

The man was fined for knowingly providing false details to an emergency management worker, and failing to comply with the direction of an emergency management worker.

Police said the 22-year-old was now in quarantine and any COVID-19 exposure risk was low.

Inspector John Toohey said anyone caught doing the wrong thing while entering Tasmania would face an on-the-spot fine of $1,557.

"These rules need to be taken seriously," he said.

"They are in place to keep us all safe and to limit the very real risk of COVID-19 entering Tasmania.

"While the vast majority of people are doing the right thing, we need those who are not to put the selfishness aside and think about the wider community, particularly those who are more vulnerable."

The Tasmanian government has classified the whole of Victoria as a high-risk (level 2) area.

Anyone wishing to travel to Tasmania from Victoria, including Tasmanian residents returning home, must apply as an essential traveller.
