NSW fly to 3-129 in postponed Shield

NSW have flown to 3-129 at lunch on day one of their postponed Sheffield Shield match with Victoria due to Will Sutherland's positive COVID-19 result.

Play was postponed before the toss on Friday when Sutherland tested positive to the virus, prompting the entire Victoria squad to be thrown into isolation.

Each member of the visiting party was retested with 10 returning negative tests on Friday night before the remaining six visitors were cleared on Saturday morning, allowing the match to start at 10.30am.

After being sent in, NSW went at a brisk rate in the first session with Daniel Hughes not out on 46 and Jason Sangha alongside him on four.

Kurtis Patterson, who scored 37 from 46 deliveries, was stumped as he come down the deck to Matt Short, who has figures of 2-25 after also claiming Moises Henriques' wicket.

Matthew Gilkes was the other wicket to fall, caught by Peter Handscombe off Mitch Perry's bowling for 13.

Sutherland meanwhile remains in quarantine in Sydney for 10 days, with the fully-vaccinated allrounder said to be only experiencing minor symptoms.

The decision to go ahead with the match is a major moment in Australian sport given it is the first case of a positive test for a vaccinated player before any major sporting event.

Sporting leagues around the world have largely taken a similar approach provided enough players are available to take the field.

"While it is impossible to remove all risk from this situation, Will was relatively non-infectious during his periods of interaction with members of the Victorian team," Cricket Australia's chief medical officer Dr John Orchard said.

"As such, and due to their compliance with biosecurity protocols, all members of the Victorian squad have been deemed casual contacts."

The match will run from Saturday to Tuesday, with a 50-over match to still be played on Wednesday.

Rain is forecast for the coming days in Sydney.
