The chair of Victoria’s adult parole board, former justice Bill Gillard, will retire following claims that he provided advice to a person police had banned from entering Crown Casino.
On Friday, the state corrections minister, Wade Noonan, demanded an explanation from Gillard over reports that he had offered advice to the man, Tony Madafferi, on how to fight the ban. Madafferi reportedly thanked him for the advice with the gift of a food hamper.
Gillard was given until Monday to address the allegations with Noonan.
On Monday afternoon, Noonan said Gillard had told him he would retire from his position effective 8 May.
“Gillard has served this state as a senior member of the legal profession, a respected judge of the supreme court of Victoria and as the head of the adult parole board,” Noonan said. “However, he has recently made what I consider to be an error of judgment that makes it appropriate that I accept his decision to retire.”
Judge Frank Shelton would assume the role of chair until a permanent replacement was found, he said.
