'We are all still in shock': Daughter of murdered woman thanks police, as Victorian man extradited

The daughter of 1993 Adelaide murder victim Suzanne Poll has thanked the police for their efforts in investigating her mother's death.

Matthew Donald Tilley, 46, has arrived at Adelaide Airport after appearing in court in Ballarat this morning for an extradition hearing.

Mr Tilley was arrested and charged on Friday after a relative's DNA allegedly linked him to the crime.

The court heard Mr Tilley, who has not previously been in custody, had been diagnosed with depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder.

Ms Poll was stabbed to death at the stationery shop where she worked on John Street, in Salisbury, in Adelaide's north.

Police have previously said that the mother-of-two was counting takings at the end of her shift when a man entered the business about 9:00pm.

SA Police today released a letter from Ms Poll's daughter Melissa, along with a photo of them and Ms Poll's son Adam.

"I wanted to take some time to say thank you to all of SAPOL from the first responding officers back in 1993 that processed the scene so professionally, to the cold-case investigators that worked for 26 years tirelessly," Melissa said.

"I also want to thank members of the public for all of the loving messages to myself and family.

"Please know that we are all still in great shock and experiencing the grief and pain as if it happened all over again, so we ask for time and space to process these feelings."

Police revealed alleged link last week

On Friday, Major Crime's Detective Superintendent Des Bray said the man left a "considerable amount" of his own blood at the Sands & McDougall shop.

He said DNA from the blood was tested many times over the years, but it was not until a few weeks ago that a positive result came back indicating that the offender had a "familial DNA link" to someone in the national police DNA database.

Outside court today, Detective Senior Sergeant Mark McEachern from SA Police said it was a major breakthrough in the case.

"Some good news for the Poll family who've been waiting so long for positive news," he said.

"There's a long investigation ahead of us, and I can't really say anything more, it would be inappropriate for me to go into any other details on the case.

"We'd like to thank Victoria Police, the Major Crime Cold Case Unit, and Homicide Squad, and Ballarat Police and CIB in relation to their assistance."
