Victorian forestry agency charged over alleged rainforest logging

VicForests will face court next month charged with illegal logging in East Gippsland

VicForests has been charged over the alleged illegal logging of rainforest buffer zones near Cann River in East Gippsland in April 2016.

Victoria's Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning laid the charges against VicForests under section 45 of the Sustainable Forests (timber) Act.

The government-owned logging agency is accused of logging protected rainforest buffer zones within the Serpentine Creek site of significance near Cann River.

Goongerah Environment Centre (GECO) reported the alleged logging breach to the department almost two years ago.

"Rainforests are one of the things that make East Gippsland so amazing and special, it's the state's stronghold for rainforest," GECO spokesman, Ed Hill said.

This particular area was warm temperate rainforest. It sort of looks more like a jungle. These areas are really precious because they offer a rare example of primitive flora that was around millions of years ago."

VicForests said it prided itself on its high standards of forestry and is treating the allegations with the utmost seriousness.

"We have identified rainforest in the area and applied buffers as required," VicForests compliance manager, Bill Paul said.

"At this stage we don't believe we have done anything wrong. We've gone through a process to identify forest and marked out buffers and protected that rainforest," Mr Paul said.

The case will go to court on April 19.

The charges carry a maximum penalty of $38,000.
