With Julie Walters

Victoria Wood will always be associated with Julie Walters, with whom she shared so much screen time and many of her biggest laughs. Here they are in Wood and Walters, their ITV show from 1981.

“He’s off sick ‘n all...”

The shoe shop sketch

From the hairdresser to the shoe shop, taken from Wood’s BBC2 show Victoria Wood As Seen On TV, which ran from 1985 to 1987 and also starred Duncan Preston, Celia Imrie and Susie Blake.

“But I want a black pair...”

Acorn Antiques

The pair were rarely better than in Acorn Antiques, also from As Seen on TV. Here they are in the very first instalment of the spoof soap. Any resemblance to Crossroads is entirely intentional.

“Here’s your coffee Miss Babs...”

Let’s Do It...

Some of Victoria Wood’s most memorable moments were when she sat behind the piano, not least The Ballad of Barry and Freda - AKA Let’s Do It - here performed in 1994.

“Beat me on the bottom with the Woman’s Weekly”

And here’s another, the Pam Song, from 1997.

“Don’t be late, there’s a thing by Alan Bennett at half past eight”

An Audience With...

She appeared on ITV in the Bafta-winning An Audience with Victoria Wood in 1988. The series of routines showcase the best of her skills as an observational standup comedian .

“Whichever door you go in, it’s always the leotard and handbag department”

And here is BBC1’s All Day Breakfast (in its entirety) first broadcast on Christmas Day, 1992.

“Let’s have a good old natter while we’re folding those aerobic girdles”

Dinnerladies

In the ‘90s she moved away from sketch comedy, without ever leaving it behind, with her BBC1 comedy, Dinnerladies.

“I’ve just taken a very powerful drug to combat male impotence”

Housewife, 49

Later came serious acting roles, with the acclaimed ITV drama Housewife, 49, which she also wrote, before returning with a sketch show special, Victoria Wood’s Mid Life Christmas.

“And will you continue to handle my potatoes?”

Julie Walters was among the many stars paying tribute to Wood in this 2010 Bafta tribute.

“She’s bound to show her face for the vol-au-vents afterwards”

But let’s end with a song and a sketch. First up, Andrea, a song about a girl and her hometown, from 1997.

“I had this lad, he were really sad, it was such a shame”

And another classic, with a sting in its tail, “Swimming the Channel”, from As Seen On TV in 1985.

“I keep thinking this is John Travolta’s ears, and it’s his fingers”
