Victoria Station crash: 'Loud bang and smoke' as train hits buffer

A commuter train careered into buffers at Victoria Station in London today causing panic for passengers.

Eyewitnesses say the crash create smoke and caused a loud bang during the busy rush hour period.

Photographs from the scene show a officials and passengers crowded around one of the platforms where the train reportedly hit the buffers.

There are no reported injuries at this stage.

One person said on Twitter: "Train just crashed into buffers at Victoria station. Loud bang.. lots of smoke and dust!".

Another said: “It was so loud I thought it might be a train crashing into the buffers, turns out I was right!”

Southern Rail said an “operational incident” happened in Victoria Station, adding that services are expected to be delayed until 8pm. 

A spokesman from Govia Thameslink Railway, said: "At approximately 18.00 today a Southern service from East Grinstead collided at low speed with the buffer stop on platform 19 at Victoria station.

"There have been no reported injuries.

"The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has been informed."
