Vic virus-free again, mulls SA road border

Victoria's streak of no coronavirus deaths or new cases has been extended to 18 days, as authorities mull possible changes for its road borders with South Australia.

As SA scrambles to contain an outbreak in Adelaide, Victorian health department officials are now meeting all SA arrivals at Melbourne airport to check for symptoms and take temperatures.

Travellers are being questioned about where they've been, and if from an identified "area of risk", requested to take a test and isolate.

Those who refuse to be tested will be treated as a close contact of a virus case and asked to self-isolate for two weeks, Deputy Chief Health Officer Allen Cheng said.

However, no policy changes at Victoria-SA road borders have been announced ahead of a 1pm phone-hook between the two state's health officials.

Victorian Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D'Ambrosio acknowledged road borders presented a "challenge" and said the state government is monitoring the situation in SA hour by hour.

Asked if there could be increased measures implemented at borders as early as Tuesday afternoon, Ms D'Ambrosio said she didn't want to "pre-empt" health advice.

Just four days ago, SA announced it would reopen its border to Victoria on December 1.

Notwithstanding, Premier Daniel Andrews now hasn't ruled out closing the border from Victoria's side and neither did the minister.

"I'm not making any presumptions here," Ms D'Ambrosio told reporters.

"I do want to reflect on the fact that Victorians have worked very hard and of course we don't want to put that in jeopardy.

"But, as we always have been, (we'll) be guided by the data, by the evidence and our health officials advice."

Ms D'Ambrosio foreshadowed Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton could make further announcements later on Tuesday.

Victoria's number of active cases remains at three as of Tuesday, with testing jumping dramatically from Monday's figure of 6695 to 17,412.

The state's virus death toll stands at 819, with the national figure 907.
