Victoria Police sergeant charged with arson over alleged insurance scam fire

Internal investigators have charged a Victoria Police sergeant with two counts of arson after he allegedly set fire to his girlfriend's investment property for the insurance money.

Jonathon Edward Miller, 32, is also facing a string of deception offences, including obtaining property by deception and obtaining financial advantage by deception.

Police are accusing the Point Cook man of being in illegal possession of a samurai sword and a knuckle duster, and failing to safely secure an air rifle.

Mr Miller, who is a sergeant normally based at Fawkner Police Station, today appeared in court for a brief administrative hearing where his bail was extended.

Mr Miller is accused of setting fire to a house in Laverton belonging to his girlfriend, Simone Kristy Azzopardi, on March 27 this year.

Police arrested and charged the pair a week ago.

In the months after the blaze, police allege, Mr Miller helped Ms Azzopardi, 42, try and claim more than $400,000 in home and contents insurance.

Ms Azzopardi, who did not appear in court today, is also facing two counts of arson and a number of deception offences.

Today, the Melbourne Magistrates' Court heard detectives had bugged Mr Miller during the course of their investigation and that the recordings had to be transcribed.

Their bail was extended and they will return to court in October.
