Police in Victoria are appealing for public help to identify a young girl amid concerns for her safety.

Images of the girl, who has shoulder-length brown hair, were released by police on Tuesday afternoon and are believed to show her between the ages of four and six.

They are understood to have been taken on Sunday 24 May last year, the day of an AFL game between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs.

The game is apparently live on a television in the background of the pictures, indicating to police that they were taken in Australia.

The girl appears to have been photographed in a well-furnished apartment with modern, large windows that possibly overlook a city skyline.

Victoria Police are the lead agency in the matter, although the photos have also been circulated to authorities interstate.

Police would not give more information about the nature of the case or when or how they had obtained the images other than to say there are fears for her safety and welfare.

The Age has indicated it is a child exploitation investigation, and said “the public release of an image of a child as part of an ongoing investigation is considered extremely rare”.

Anyone with information or anyone who may be able to identify the girl is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report at crimestoppersvic.com.au.
