Victoria Embankment road signs scattered and nearby car park damaged

Road signs have been left strewn across the ground and a bollard damaged in a car park close to the Victoria Embankment, where a former through road is now blocked off to car traffic.

Temporary signs showing that the road is blocked and other road signage was found scattered on the site near the river, and a metal bollard appeared to be bent out of shape.

The mess was discovered this morning, Wednesday July 21.

It has left the road along the river Trent covered in signage.

There is no indication yet as to who is responsible.

The road signs are in place to prevent cars driving along the road by the Embankment, which is no longer in use for through traffic. The road was closed off permanently in May this year , following a trial scheme which commenced in August 2020.

The decision to close off the road to traffic split opinion at the time. Residents in the Meadows, which borders on to the river and the Embankment, were divided on whether it should remain closed, with 54 of those asked saying they were in favour.

Commenting at the time, Councillor Rosemary Healy, portfolio holder for transport at Nottingham City Council said: “Creating a traffic-free environment has improved access to the riverside, parks and gardens. We’ve received a lot of positive feedback from both residents and visitors who have found the space quieter and safer, and enjoyed using it more.

“In a survey last year, residents told us that parks and green spaces are important to them, and that people are looking to walk and cycle more in the wake of the pandemic.”

Nottinghamshire Police and Nottingham City Council have been approached for comment.
