Victor Wanyama 'wanted' for Celtic loan return as Neil Lennon looks for midfield reinforcements

Celtic's interest in bringing Victor Wanyama back to Parkhead could be reignited in January, according to a report.

The Tottenham midfielder was close to a move north in the summer, after being frozen out of the Spurs side under Mauricio Pochettino.

Interest failed to come to fruition, however, with the Scottish champions instead focusing their efforts on strengthening other areas.

Winger Mohamed Elyounoussi arrived on loan from Wanyama's former employers Southampton, while left-backs Boli Bolingoli and Greg Taylor were recruited as attentions turned to replacing Kieran Tierney.

Neil Lennon and co are believed to be on the look-out for central midfield reinforcements when the January window reopens, however, and it seems Wanyama could once again find himself subject to an offer.

The 28-year-old has managed just 113 minutes of football since his summer move away from North London fell through, and he hasn't been included in a matchday squad since September.

According to The Guardian, his situation could be the catalyst for a return to Scotland for the Kenyan, with Celtic remaining keen to offer him a chance to revive his career north of the border.

The newspaper claims an initial six-month loan could be on the table, and the opportunity for a permanent move could open up in the summer when the midfielder enters the final year of his Tottenham contract.

Wanyama first signed for Celtic from Belgian side Beerschot AC back in 2011, and would make 93 appearances over two years in Glasgow before a big-money move to Southampton.

He's since made close to 100 appearances for both the Saints and Spurs, but the arrivals of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso have left him well and truly frozen out of the picture.
