Victor Wanyama's first words after leaving Tottenham on free transfer to join Montreal Impact

Tottenham have confirmed that midfielder Victor Wanyama has left the club to complete a free transfer to MLS side Montreal Impact.

The Kenyan international joined Spurs from Southampton in 2016 after a successful spell on the South Coast following his move from Celtic in 2013.

He signed a five-year contract in North London after completing his £11million move from the Saints, but saw injuries hamper his progression.

Despite an excellent first year at Spurs, in which he played in 47 matches in all competitions, Wanyama would go on to appear in only 50 more matches over the course of the next three years, just four of which came in the 2019/20 season.

Spurs confirmed the move on Tuesday evening in a short statement as they wished the midfielder well in the future.

The midfielder still had over a year left on his contract at Spurs, but was allowed to move on without the club collecting a fee - despite Club Brugge attempting to pick him up in the summer for around £13million.

Wanyama makes the move to MLS as a designated player, but will still have to pass a medical before the deal is completed.

"I'm really happy to join an exciting club like the Montreal Impact," Wanyama told the club's website.

"MLS continues to grow every season and I'm looking forward to bringing further awareness to this team, city and league across Africa.

"When I spoke to Thierry and he told me he wanted me to join him in Montreal, I didn't have to think twice.

"He has always been a player that I've admired, and I am really happy to get the opportunity to work with him and to play a part that can ensure that the Montreal Impact have an improved season and hopefully reach the ultimate stages of the competitions in which we compete.

"I think the Saputo family and the management team in Montreal have a great plan in place and I am hoping I can make a great contribution to the success of this project."
