Victor Wanyama earns surprise backing after Celtic link in the summer

Mauricio Pochettino has broken his silence on Victor Wanyama who was in the brink of quitting in the summer.

The Kenyan midfielder had looked poised for a move away from Tottenham in the last window, with Club Brugge a potential destination.

Wanyama even had a medical ahead of a £13million transfer to the Belgian giants but the deal fell through.

He was also linked with a return to Celtic, the club at which he won two titles as well as the Scottish Cup between 2011 and 2013.

But a move back to Scotland never materialised and the 28-year-old looked to be left in limbo, along with Christian Eriksen who also looked set to leave.

However Spurs boss Pochettino has insisted he will be given a chance with the English Premier League side.

Wanyama made 24 appearances last season but has yet to feature in this campaign.

Pochettino, though, has claimed that could change.

He said: Victor Wanyama is in my plans. Christian is in my plans.

"Before I understood that they were in a difficult situation and, of course, we tried to help them, to help the club, to do their business.”
