Victor Orta outlines why Brexit will create new transfer opportunities for Leeds United

As is the case across all industries, Brexit will have a huge impact on professional football in this country.

UK and EU leaders are currently in the final stages of attempting to trash out a trade deal, the results of which will have a huge say in how English clubs approach the transfer market.

Leeds United's promotion back to the Premier League last season saw them hugely step up their transfer outlay in the summer, as they broke a 19-year-old transfer record on their way to securing £100million's worth of new talent.

This was all done under the existing transfer and work permit rules, but Brexit means the goalposts may have changed by the time they enter the summer 2021 market.

Leeds' director of football Victor Orta is acutely aware of this and believes it will provide the club with new opportunities, citing Latin America as one example.

"The regulation in England are changing after Brexit," Orta told the World Football Summit last month.

"Next week we will know the next regulation, now a Brazilian or an Argentinian can be the same as a Spaniard, then obviously we need to [understand] any situation from the DTI.

"We are waiting and then perhaps it's true that one of the things about Brexit is opening new markets in South American because now we can be more open for trying to get them with the situation for new work permit that is necessary to play here."

These changes will not impact the January transfer window which is little more than a month away. Orta has never been shy in talking about his reservations in doing business in the winter market and told LeedsLive how the club will approach their business when the time comes around.

"I think we need to be really clever," he said at the unveiling of the Kalvin Phillips mural in Leeds in November.

"If one option appears who we think clearly improves the squad, obviously [we need to] be ready to make [an offer]."

One of the hallmarks of the winter window is player availability. Orta was clear that moves in January can often hinge on a case-by-case basis, depending on which players are playing regularly at certain clubs and others who are not.

"For me first, it's [about] availability.

"You go to a player who is playing in a lower division, or you go for a player who is not playing in your division or at another level, it is a risk."

Last January saw Leeds move to sign striker Jean-Kevin Augustin on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, but Frenchman struggled to make an impact at Elland Road.
