Victor Orta explains how Brexit could affect Leeds United's plans in the transfer market

Leeds United director of football Victor Orta has revealed how Brexit could affect the club in the transfer market.

The United Kingdom left the European Union on January 31 after years of uncertainty.

Whilst it has been a hot topic of debate within politics, there will be an impact in the football world too.

There are no certainties surrounding how Brexit will immediately impact clubs trying to trade across the world in an already complicated market, however, clubs have begun their preparations for inevitable change.

Leeds have often operated with a British core to their side, with captain Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips, Luke Ayling, Stuart Dallas and Patrick Bamford all from the UK.

However, the recruitment of Jean-Kevin Augustin in January shows the Whites are constantly scouring the European markets and that would certainly be the case if they were to earn promotion to the Premier League.

With that in mind, Orta has spoken out about the potential impact of Brexit and how it has added uncertainty to the transfer market.

“The reality is that there is nothing safe, nothing legislated, nothing planned. We have no official statement from the FA or the EFL because there is no nothing decided," he told  Diario de Sevilla.

“At Leeds United, we have a large number of English players, which would give us a lot of room for manoeuvre compared to other teams. We have to be prepared. Maybe we can get more English players to play more games.

"To be honest there is quality, a lot, but I return to uncertainty. To maintain the show and international competition, the regulation would have to go to a middle-ground.”
