On paper, Friday’s game versus Detroit was an ideal opportunity for the Rockets to snap their franchise record losing streak. The game was at home, Houston’s desired starting lineup was finally healthy, and the Pistons entered as one of only two NBA teams with a worse record.
Yet, it still wasn’t enough to keep the Rockets from a 19th straight defeat. Led by 23 points from Frank Jackson and 20 points and 6 rebounds by rookie Saddiq Bey, the Pistons (12-29) cruised to victory over the Rockets (11-29) at Toyota Center, 113-100 (box score).
Recent injury returnees John Wall (21 points, 7 assists) and Christian Wood (18 points, 11 rebounds, 2 blocks) each played well, though in slightly limited minutes. The biggest story for Houston was an off night by Victor Oladipo, who had 19 points on 7-of-19 shooting (38.9% FG), along with four turnovers to three assists. Oladipo missed seven of nine 3-point attempts, with his lone makes coming in the final moments, long after the game had been decided. Wall added a team-high six turnovers.
Second-year guard Kevin Porter Jr. left Friday’s game early with right quad soreness, and his status moving forward is not yet clear.
Houston returns to action on Sunday afternoon with another home game versus Oklahoma City, with tipoff set for 1 p.m. Central. For now, here’s postgame reaction after Friday’s disappointing loss to Detroit.
