Victor Lindelof sends message to Edinson Cavani over Manchester United future

Victor Lindelof has suggested Edinson Cavani should stay at Manchester United so he gets to play in front of supporters at Old Trafford.

Cavani was instrumental in United's 6-2 demolition of Roma in their Europa League semi-final first leg on Thursday night, scoring twice and setting up two others. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were again indebted to the veteran striker, as they completed a sensational comeback, scoring five unanswered goals after trailing 2-1 at half time.

Solskjaer admitted after the game he is trying to convince Cavani to stay, with the 34-year-old considering a return to South America rather than extending his contract by a further 12 months.

It was put to Lindelof, in an interview with MUTV, that Cavani had never played — or celebrated in front of — United supporters at Old Trafford because of the ongoing covid-19 restrictions.

“That's a shame,” Lindelof said.

“I think he would have enjoyed scoring goals in front of our fans and I think everyone is missing them. Hopefully, we can get them back because a night like this deserves fans.”

Lindelof then praised Cavani's individual performance, as the Uruguayan impressed in attack alongside Bruno Fernandes — who also bagged a brace — and the excellent Paul Pogba.

On the goals United scored, he said: "There were a few really good ones. Edi's goal, the one he put in the top corner, was very nice. The combination for the first goal [scored by Fernandes] was also very good. It's difficult to pick one but if I have to, I think I go for Edi's one in the top corner.

”I think Edi was absolutely brilliant today. I think he showed what kind of player he is. His experience as well; he was absolutely top in the way he managed the game, controlled the ball and obviously scored goals as well.“
