Victims have lost £400K to Amazon Prime scam

Police have issued a warning after fraudsters masquerading as Amazon staff conned people out of thousands of pounds.

The scam, which has targeted hundreds of people, involves a recorded telephone message stating the recipient's Amazon details are being used by someone else to purchase a subscription.

The victim is urged to press 1 to cancel the subscription and then asked to download the Team Viewer app to fill in their bank details, Wales Online reports.

However, they have actually been put through to a scammer posing as an Amazon customer advisor.

In a warning which was shared by South Wales Police, Action Fraud said it had received 200 reports of people losing money due to the scam.

A further 300 people had been targeted but hung up the phone before giving their bank details.

It also confirmed victims have lost more than £400,000 since September this year.

Pauline Smith, Head of Action Fraud, said: “If you’ve received an unexpected phone call, or other communication, stop and take a minute to think about whether an organisation would get in touch with you out of the blue in this way.

"Instead, contact them directly using a known email or phone number."

How to protect yourself from text message & cold call scams

A victim of fraud or cyber crime can report it to Action Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040.

South Wales Police advised: "Never install software as a result of a cold call. Always question uninvited approaches and refuse unusual requests for person/financial information."

Amazon has confirmed that it is aware of the scam and stated it will never call a customer for payment outside the website.
