Victim of tragic drowning in Leitrim named locally as family and friends pay tribute

The man who tragically passed away after a snorkelling accident on Wednesday evening in Leitrim has been named locally as Michael Hoey.

Michael, aged in his 70s, passed away in Co Leitrim at around 9pm on Wednesday.

The alarm was raised after he failed to return while snorkelling at Spencer Harbour in Drunkeeran.

His body was discovered a short time later by emergency services.

A garda spokesman said: "On Wednesday, 21st July 2021 at approximately 9pm, the alarm was raised when a man (70s) diving (snorkelling) at Spencer Harbour, Drunkeeran, Co Leitrim (Lough Allen) failed to return to the surface.

"His body was recovered from the water a short time later by local emergency services.

"The Coroner has been notified and the body of the deceased has been removed to the mortuary at Sligo University Hospital for a post-mortem examination."

An online book of condolences has been opened on rip.ie for Michael.

Sinn Fein Councillor Colm Carthy told the Irish Mirror: “The community are still trying to come to terms with the news, it’s an absolute tragedy and our thoughts are with the family at this very sad time.”

Michael’s son Chris, who lives in California, said he was struggling to come to terms with the death.

In a touching Facebook post, he said: “There are no words to describe the feelings and emotions.

“One never expects to get this kind of call.

“We’re all just in a constant state of disbelief and a hope that this is, just a bad dream.

“It’s hard to believe you’re gone Dad.”
