Victim of Cheetham Hill assault was badly beaten by gang in seemingly-motiveless, unprovoked attack

A man who was badly beaten in a secluded spot in Cheetham Hill was attacked by a vicious gang.

The victim remains in hospital.

No motive has been established for the assault.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News , the incident happened on Mary Street , a long backstreet which runs behind businesses fronting Bury New Road near Manchester city centre.

It runs near the River Irwell at one end and although tree-lined in parts, is an area of industrial units and commercial property, but close to tower blocks in Greengate Salford.

It can be used as a cut through to Manchester city centre.

Now Greater Manchester Police have revealed the victim is still being treated in hospital for 'serious' face and leg injuries.

The victim, who is in his 40s, was attacked by a group of two to three men and a woman.

In a statement, GMP said: "It was an unprovoked assault, there was no clear motive.

"The victim was not robbed. The males were bald and wearing dark clothing."

Officers were called by the North West Ambulance Service at around 7.50am on Wednesday, September 1 to a report of an assault on Mary Street. It is believed the attack happened at about 7.30am that day.

Enquiries are ongoing and no arrests have been made.
