The 30-year-old man whose "horrific" death sparked a murder investigation on a quiet Wigan street has been named.

At the scene, officers found a man, who has now been identified at Mr Williamson, collapsed on the street with serious injuries, caused by multiple stab wounds.

Despite the best efforts of medics, he tragically died at the scene.

Now, police have urged anyone who knows what happened in the "horrific incident" that led to the tragic death speaks up.

Detective Inspector Gareth Davies, from Greater Manchester Police's major incident team said: "Our thoughts go out to Thomas's family, as they continue to be supported by our specialist officers. They have asked that their privacy please be respected at this distressing time.

"This is an horrific incident, in which Thomas tragically lost his life, and we're following a number of lines of enquiry to determine exactly what happened, and to bring those responsible to justice.

"But we can't do it alone - we're urging anyone who may have heard anything, or has CCTV in the area to please get in touch."

Nearly residents were left shocked after the incident, with some saying this was usually a very quiet area.

Susan Fitzmaurice who lives facing Charleston Court says she and her husband were awoken around 2am by officers asking to view the footage from their CCTV camera.

She said her husband has viewed the tape and saw people shortly after 1:30am.

"Someone in a light coloured jacket walked past the van at the end of the street" she said.

"They looked they had stumbled or dropped something.

"Then not long after someone dressed in black with white trainers came past on a bike.

"Then a few minutes after that, the bike went down James Street. We're not sure what relevance that has if any.

"The police have gone through it and logged it all and they've said they'll get back to us if they need more.

"It's bloody scary though really having something like that happen so nearby."
