Victoria well on top against NSW in Shield

Moises Henriques has dragged NSW to 6-123 at tea on day one of their star-studded Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria in Sydney, where Mitchell Perry claimed the prized scalp of Steve Smith.

Perry, who made his first-class debut earlier this summer, found Smith's edge with a delivery on a good length during Wednesday's morning session at the SCG.

The 20-year-old snagged another wicket after lunch, ending Peter Nevill's stubborn resistance to reduce the Blues to 5-71.

Henriques (42 not out) rallied in a 48-run stand with Sean Abbott, who was stumped in the shadows of tea while charging former Test spinner Jon Holland.

Smith was out for seven, having weathered a testing new-ball examination from James Pattinson after being summoned to the middle during the fifth over of the innings.

Pattinson, who was on drinks duty for Australia's first two Tests against India then suffered an untimely rib injury that ruined his hopes of featuring in the series, bent his back while backing up Victoria's decision to bowl first.

Pattinson removed openers Daniel Hughes and Nick Larkin, who alongside Abbott are the only members of NSW's XI yet to play a Test, as the hosts crashed to 4-47.

Hughes, who made 24 after being dropped on two, Henriques and Nevill (10) were the only members of the Blues' top six to reach double figures.

Pattinson created a short-leg chance to dismiss Hughes during his opening spell, which was put down by Jake Fraser-McGurk, then returned to the attack to make a mess of the opener's stumps.

Pattinson has snared 2-32 from 16 overs, delivering six maidens to help build presure on the home side.

The express paceman had an unusual near miss before to lunch, when he was prone on the pitch and almost hit on the head by a return throw from teammate Nic Maddinson, but otherwise rarely been ruffled.

Will Sutherland claimed the other wicket to fall in the opening session, trapping Kurtis Patterson lbw for four.
