Vicky Phelan 'roped into' Croagh Patrick climb with Charlie Bird after emotional meeting

Vicky Phelan has revealed she has been "roped into" a climb of Croagh Patrick with legendary RTE broadcaster Charlie Bird and his family.

The two met for tea and scones and the "conversation flowed" as the pair laughed, cried and shared a hug, while also making plans to meet again.

Vicky praised Charlie after his appearance on The Late Late Show on Friday night, thanking him for opening up so honestly about his diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease.

The 72-year-old revealed in November that he had been diagnosed with the disease.

During the interview, the former RTE broadcaster said that he "cries everyday" and was candid about his life since the diagnosis.

He also revealed that he was looking forward to meeting the cervical cancer campaigner today.

After the emotional segment, Vicky wrote to Charlie on Twitter: "You were so vulnerable sharing so openly the terror of living with a disease that you know is going to take everything from you – your voice, your swallow, your mobility…yet your love of life, family and friends shone through.

"I have no doubt that you brought comfort to so many and I really hope that you get comfort from all the love and support that is being sent your way from all over Ireland."

The two got in touch after Charlie saw Vicky's plea to the Irish government to let terminally ill people choose to die with medical assistance.

Vicky appeared on The Late Late Show last month and revealed to host Ryan Tubridy that she planned to finish her cancer treatment and spend the rest of her time with her family.

After his appearance on the show, Charlie released a statement on Twitter, writing: "I cried this morning but they were tears of joy at the overwhelming support I received for my Late Late Show appearance.

"If I am still mobile in the Spring, I will climb Croagh Patrick to highlight MND and other terminal illnesses. You’re all invited to join me. I love you all."
