Vicky Phelan reaches out to Andrew McGinley with heartbreaking message about children

Vicky Phelan has praised Andrew McGinley for his tireless campaigning to improve Ireland's mental health services.

The CervicalCheck campaigner reached out to Andrew online after he posted an update about his efforts.

The Dublin man lost his three children - Conor, nine, Daragh, seven and Carla, three - in January 2020.

They were killed by their mother Deirdre Morley, who was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity earlier this year.

Andrew has been keeping his children's memories alive in various ways since they died, including with an active social media account 'Conor's Clips'.

It is also through this account that he has been continuing his efforts to see reforms made to the country's mental health services.

In a post on Twitter on Sunday, he posted a screenshot of a message he received from one follower regarding the issue who praised him for speaking out.

The individual said to Andrew: "Hi. I just wanted to say your kids inspire me to go seek help for my mental health struggles. So I can be the best mam to my own kids.

"No words can ever take away the heartache of your devastating loss.

"But by listening to your interview on Brian Dowling's podcast, it made me realise how important it was for me to seek help to get my head in a better space. So thank you."

Andrew captioned the post: "I’ve received many messages like this and it’s why I speak out about Mental Health.

"I’m not a Mental Health professional but I do know that we need to look after ourselves and others. We also need better Mental Health Services.

"Apologies if this upsets anyone."

Andrew had opened up to Brian Dowling on his podcast Death Becomes Him in October about how the deaths of his children have affected him and the moments leading up to the tragedy.

Vicky Phelan sent some words of encouragement to Andrew following his honest post over the weekend.

She said on Monday: "Thank you for sharing this with us and for ALL the advocacy work you do. You are saving lives. Your children would be so proud of you."

The mother-of-two also shared her own update online after enjoying a weekend away in West Clare.

She posted a snap of a stunning sunset on her Instagram on Sunday as she told fans, “it's the simple pleasures in life that make me grateful to be alive.”

Vicky was joined on the trip by her daughter Amelia and her best friend Susan, who she described as “two of the most important women” in her life.
