Vicky McClure stars in new BBC comedy set in Nottingham

Alas, there could still be a while to wait until Line of Duty is back on our screens but fans of DI Kate Fleming can get their Vicky McClure fix well ahead of that as she is announced as the star of a new BBC comedy.

Set in her hometown of Nottingham and featuring members of the BAFTA winning Television Workshop she attended as an aspiring teen actress, Roots will hit the airwaves on BBC Radio 4 at 11.30am tomorrow (January 31).

The one-off special tells the story of Craig Shields, a rich, successful businessman who decides to go back to the Nottingham Workshop which transformed his life and help similarly disadvantaged kids make something of themselves.

However, Craig's altruistic homecoming is not what he envisaged.

Support he was relying on from old friends and colleagues doesn't materialise and while he would prefer to forget most of his past there is one person who still has a place in his heart - his long time ex Sandra (played by Wollaton's finest, Vicky McClure).

Although a work of fiction, Roots is heavily inspired by the very real Nottingham Television Workshop, which over the years has kick-started the careers of two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton, Bafta-winning Vicky McClure and Hollywood actor Jack O'Connell.

Fittingly, it has been directed by the group's former head honcho Ian Smith, who mentored not only these trio of stars but also the likes of Joe Dempsie and Anjli Mohindra.

The show was created by Love In Recovery's Pete Jackson and Mario Stylianides. It is written by a brand new writer, Ava Pickett.

Roots will be available on catch-up shortly after it airs.
