NEW DELHI — Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal revealed his first look as a freedom fighter from his upcoming film “Sardar Udham.”
On Oct. 7, 2021, Kaushal shared the picture of his look on Instagram where he is seen sporting long, messy hair while shackled in prison.
In the caption, the 33-year-old actor also shared the story of the revolutionary fighter.
“1931, Prison, India,” he wrote alongside the picture.
“Udham Singh was in prison for possession of prohibited papers “Ghadr-i-Gunj” (“Voice of Revolt”). He was released later but under constant surveillance. Soon, he escaped to Europe and never got to return to India.”
Talking about his character, Kaushal, in an interview, shared how he prepared for the role of Udham Singh.
“The story of Sardar Udham Singh is one that enthralled and inspired me,” said Kaushal.
“It represents strength, pain, passion, extraordinary courage and sacrifice, and many such values that I have tried to do justice through my character in the film.”
“The role called for a lot of physical and even more mental preparation to get into Udham Singh’s shoes and bring to life the story of a man whose heroism and grit stand unmatched.”
Director Shoojit Sircar also opened up about the process of the film and stated that it’s an “ode to the lionhearted spirit” of Udham Singh.
“‘Sardar Udham’ to me is not just a film; it is a dream come true,” he said.
“It took years of in-depth research to unearth and share with the world the valiant story of a martyr who sacrificed his life to avenge India’s most dreadful tragedy. The entire team is extremely proud to have had an opportunity to work on bringing forward a story of a revolutionary who played a key role in India’s freedom struggle.”
Written by Shubhendu Bhattacharya and Ritesh Shah, “Sardar Udham” will be produced by Sheel Kumar and Ronnie Lahiri. Apart from Kaushal, the film also stars Sam Redford, Banita Sandhu, Kristy Averton, Shaun Scott, Stephen Hogan, and Tim Berrington.
The film will also feature “Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare” actor Amol Parashar in a special appearance as Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
“Sardar Udham” is a biopic of freedom fighter Sardar Udham Singh, who assassinated Michael O’Dwyer in 1940. He assassinated the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab in British India to avenge the brutal killings of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in 1919.
The film is slated for release on streaming platform Amazon Prime Video on Oct. 16, 2021.
