Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha: MP backs plans for statue to honour late Leicester City chairman

An MP has put forward a proposal for a monumental of two elephants to be erected in memory of the late Leicester City chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.

Keith Vaz, the MP representing Leicester East, has revealed plans to honour the Thai businessman, who died along with four others in a helicopter crash outside the King Power Stadium in October last year.

Leicester have already announced their own plans to construct their own tribute to their legendary owner, who oversaw the club's Premier League title-winning campaign in 2015-16.

But the Labour MP believes the public should be able to pay their respects with a statue of their own.

"There will be a statue at King Power Stadium for him but residents said it would be nice to have something named after him in the city," Mr Vaz said.

"We have to honour him. He is a legend."

The monument of two elephants with their trunks intertwined, which is regarded as a symbol of good fortune in Thailand, would be put up next year under the plans.

It is understood the statue would not be paid for by the taxpayer, with money instead raised by a number of fundraising activities.
