Vicente Luque says he was ‘exposed’ in UFC 244 loss, vows to improve and grow

Vicente Luque got a taste of the next level of welterweight competition at UFC 244, and it didn’t work out well for him.

After putting together a six-fight winning streak against mid-tier names in the 170-pound division, Luque (17-7-1 MMA, 10-3 UFC) got the big step up he wanted in a matchup against Thompson (15-4-1 MMA, 10-4-1 UFC), who has twice challenged for UFC gold and has been a perennial contender for years.

The fight didn’t go well for Luque, because he was largely picked apart over the course of three rounds to a unanimous decision loss. “Wonderboy” styled out, and although he avoided being finished, Luque said he learned some hard lessons about his flaws (via Instagram):

It was an honor to face this guy in the octagon! Didn’t go the way I wanted but definitely was what I needed. He exposed many things in my game and I’m gonna make sure to improve and grow after this. Gave it all I had as always and looked to put the best show I could for all of those watching! I’ll be back better then ever 🙏🏼👊🏼 .

Despite coming up short, it was not all negative for Luque at UFC 244, which took place at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Not only did the Brazilian get to show the world exactly how tough he, but his courageous effort against Thompson led to “Fight of the Night” honors for both men at UFC 245.
